The DVM mentorship/internship program at Tulare Veterinary Hospital is a 6 to 12 month program. The first four weeks of the internship will include a mentorship period where your mentor will provide meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for professional development. Our mentorship program covers topics such as communication, physical exam skills, surgical skills, medical records and clinical reasoning. After the mentorship period, there will be a senior clinician on staff, however we highly encourage our interns to test their veterinary knowledge to develop their client communication skills by handling their own cases. Medical and surgical skills will be taught, and practiced. These skills include, but are not limited to: suturing , closing incisions, spays and neuters with or without assistance - as appropriate, wound evaluation, surgical repair of wounds, drain placement, antibioitc selection, pain management and follow up. Students will assist and evaluate more invasive surgeries. We offer a Monday through Friday schedule with little to no weekend hours. Internships are salaried positions with paid CE. A small furnished bedroom located at the hospital is provided. The goal of the mentorship/internship is to increase skill and confidence so that the student can evaluate and treat simple and more challenging cases with success and confidence.
We strongly encourage any applicant to the internship program to spend at least two weeks visiting the hospital.
