PetSmart Charities desires to be a driving force in the forging of stronger relationships between the veterinary profession and animal welfare organizations. There are many areas where these two groups have a high degree of overlap and it is felt that with a concerted effort by a strategic grant-maker with the size and scope of PetSmart Charities, significant impact can be made. The key to this effort being successful is an individual with the skills, background, and passion to drive this pillar forward. Specifically, this individual will be a veterinarian and be responsible for all aspects of a multifaceted campaign at all North American veterinary schools, helping to create a strategy designed to elevate the presence of PetSmart Charities within the veterinary technician community, and designing/implementing the best strategy for PetSmart Charities to be present at important veterinary conferences. The successful candidate will be passionate about the mission of PetSmart Charities and will have deep knowledge of the veterinary profession, animal welfare organizations and the organizational dynamics of a large corporation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Implement and manage PetSmart Charities' veterinary school outreach program.
This will require a deep understanding of veterinary education, student life and contract negotiation.
This individual will be responsible for working with administrative officials to design scholarships and research programs, as well as interviewing, managing and incentivizing student representatives.
Design and implement (along with other member of PetSmart Charities' team) a strategy to optimize PetSmart Charities' presence at major veterinary conferences.
This may include booth management, sponsorship negotiation and public speaking.
Design and implement a cohesive program to raise PetSmart Charities' reputation among veterinary technicians and other veterinary paraprofessional staff.
This requires an understanding of the role that paraprofessional staffs play in veterinary practices and veterinary medicine.
Serve as a subject matter expert for veterinary questions from Regional Relationship teams and other PetSmart Charities team members. In conjunction with the relationship managers, identify key granting opportunities the further the connection between veterinarians and AWO's.
Liaise with PetSmart, Inc. Store Ops and merchandising colleagues to work on projects of mutual interest. Examples of such projects include but are not limited to adoption center designs, policy & procedure development and emergency response.
Professional veterinary degree (DVM, VMD or equivalent) required.
5+ years experience working since obtaining veterinary degree.
2+ years experience working in an organization with more than 50 employees.
3 + years experience working in large corporate offices.
Experience in an animal welfare organization, either as a veterinarian, leader or volunteer with significant responsibilities.
Demonstrated deep knowledge of veterinary education, preferably at three or more institutions.
Experience in managing remote teams a plus.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, large projects simultaneously.
Political acumen sufficient to understand when and how to best escalate issues and interface with PetSmart Inc.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create positive, productive relationships quickly. Demonstrated understanding of principles of management and supervision (initially supervising only student ambassadors), as well as contract negotiation.
Deep understanding of organizational dynamics and ability to work effectively within a team as well as individually.
Successful applicant does not need to be currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine.
Demonstrated ability to work remotely as well as in an office environment.
