Island Shelter and Clinic Veterinarian

Enthusiastic, compassionate clinical veterinarian needed in a progressive non-profit clinic and animal shelter in the beautiful US Virgin Islands {St. Croix}. Successful candidate will report to the Director of Veterinary Medicine in supporting the rapidly growing low-cost community clinic as well as field/mobile work in a community outreach program.

Founded in 1973, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (SCAWC) is the only open-access animal shelter on the island of St. Croix. It is a private non-profit organization with limited animal control duties through the Department of Agriculture.  Intake is over 3000 animals per year serving a human population of over 50,000.

Clinic hours (75%) include general wellness and sick patient appointments, and internal medicine at our low-cost, clinic. Shelter animal care includes health certificates for large transports, high volume spay neuter surgeries, and support for a strong feral TNVR program. Fieldwork (25%) involves mobile wellness and health screening clinics in targeted low-income, high surrender-rate neighborhoods.

The SCAWC is also the contact for wildlife cases on St. Croix through collaboration with USFWS, NPS and St. Croix Avian Sanctuary. An opportunity and need for equine veterinary services may be explored with the right candidate.

Excellent client communication skills are essential as is the ability to provide non-biased support with an appreciation for cultural and socioeconomic diversity. Experience and familiarity with Caribbean culture and/or bilingual in Spanish are highly desirable. At least five years’ experience is preferred to facilitate licensing.  Salary to commensurate with experience.

This is a fast-paced work environment with a heavy caseload. However, the SCAWC is supportive of a healthy work/life balance with ample opportunity to enjoy living in paradise.
