The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national nonprofit association established in 1863 that represents more than 99,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Accounts Payable (AP) Lead Accountant to join our Finance and Business Services team, located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois – a northwest suburb of Chicago. The AVMA’s mission is to lead the profession by advocating for its members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.

Under the general direction of the Accounts Payable Manager, the AP Lead Accountant is responsible for account analysis, account reconciliation, refund processing, and reconciliation of outstanding accounts payable checks, as well as the timely and accurate processing of invoices and expense reports. This position will also process, record, and report cash disbursements, while ensuring compliance with all financial policies, procedures, GAAP, and audit guidelines; and assist with projects, as needed.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
• Minimum of 3 years of related accounts payable experience; association experience is a plus
• Demonstrated knowledge of accounting practices and principles
• Experience with accounting and expense reporting software is required, knowledge of Great Plains and Concur is highly preferred
• Effective time management skills, with the ability to multi-task, prioritize responsibilities and meet multiple deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, with the ability to interact and provide exceptional customer service to all levels of AVMA staff, volunteer leadership and members
• Highly organized, with good attention to detail
• Strong computer skills, with the knowledge of commonly used computer applications
• Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, as needed
