The EMC is a premier full-service equine hospital in Leesburg, Virginia. As part of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, the EMC offers advanced specialty care, 24-hour emergency and critical care, and an array of diagnostic services for all ages and breeds of horses. Located in Northern Virginia, the EMC is in the heart of the mid-Atlantic region’s horse country, close to an abundant variety of cultural and outdoor activities.
Our faculty includes three surgeons board-certified by ACVS, two of whom are additionally board-certified by ACVSMR and one of whom is additionally board-certified by ACVECC, three ACVIM specialists, one of whom is additionally board-certified by ACVECC, an internal medicine clinical instructor, and one ACVSMR specialist. We train residents in Internal Medicine (2) and Surgery (2), as well as five interns who rotate through the different services.
EMC has a separate emergency & critical care service that covers approximately two-thirds of the hospital’s emergency caseload, allowing other faculty members to focus more fully on their specific areas of specialty interest. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive and compassionate veterinary care, being a valuable educational resource for referring veterinarians, future veterinarians and clients, and contributing to the advancement of new knowledge through innovative scholarship and clinical discovery. Our caseload of approximately 2,400 cases annually consists of horses of all breeds, ages and disciplines, and involves a diverse mix of surgical and medical cases. We are extremely fortunate to serve conscientious clients and dedicated referring veterinarians.
The clinical activities of the EMC are supported by a 24-stall hospital, a separate sports medicine clinic, ICU stalls for neonates and adults, a separate 7-stall biosafety level 2 isolation unit, 2 OR suites, a comprehensive clinical laboratory, digital radiography and ultrasonography, standing MRI (Hallmarq), computed tomography (Pegaso HD CT), nuclear scintigraphy (MiE), video gastroscopy, a comprehensive regenerative medicine laboratory, an on-site farrier service and a large technical staff including many licensed veterinary technicians.
In January 2024, the Jane and Stephen Hale Equine Performance Evaluation Center opened. It is a 20,000 square foot indoor evaluation complex consisting of three surfaces (dust-free synthetic, poured rubber and asphalt) and containing a 75x130 foot riding area, two 12x130 foot jogging strips and two 50x50 foot lunging areas – all under one roof.
