Position Summary:
Aggieland Humane Society is a non-profit humane society providing humane care and adoption services for homeless and abandoned animals. Aggieland Humane Society focuses on promoting the human animal bond and responsible pet ownership to enhance the welfare of animals and people in the community. We are looking for a shelter veterinarian to lead our medical operations and ensure the highest standards of animal care. Mentorship is available for new career veterinarians or those new to shelter medicine. The veterinarian will coordinate shelter medical operations, develop shelter medicine protocols, and work collaboratively with executive leadership to spearhead new initiatives and fortify current practices. You will manage a team of veterinary assistants and work collaboratively with the Spay/Neuter Veterinarian.
General Duties:
Develop and implement medical protocols and work with staff to provide outstanding, comprehensive care to shelter and foster animals.
Perform physical exams, routine diagnostics, prescribe and administer medications, order and interpret tests as needed, provide referral for off-site care when appropriate.
Evaluate physical and behavioral health and make recommendations about the prognosis and disposition of shelter animals.
Ensure compliance with relevant animal sheltering regulations and laws (Texas Department of State Health Services).
Oversee shelter drug inventory and ensure compliance with DEA requirements.
Oversee development and implementation of protocols in the shelter for prevention and control of infectious/zoonotic disease.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board Veterinarian to identify, develop, and recommend onsite management protocols to ensure adherence to sound veterinary medical practices by all staff and, as may be needed, help to implement such protocols for medical and general care protocols for the health and well-being of shelter and foster animals.
Provide routine training for staff concerning the medical and surgical care of shelter animals, including those relating to nursing care procedures, cleaning, handling, and vaccination and quarantine protocols.
Offer leadership and coaching for the animal care staff and sustain a strong commitment to teamwork, high professional standards, and continuing development among all shelter employees.
Build relationships with local vet practices and participate in community outreach activities, including but not limited to microchip and rabies vaccination clinics, and TNR activities.

Advanced computer skills and ability to learn shelter management software.
Background and/or strong interest in shelter medicine is preferred.
Minimum Requirements:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medicial Doctor (VMD) degree from an accredited college or university.
Licensure:
Possession of a current license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.
Current DEA license or ability to obtain.
Working Environment/Physical Demands:
Regular walking and standing (the campus is made up of several buildings).
